Home 1

The next batch of images created and developed by myself were all related to a single topic; home. In the case of my own images, I have created a sequence of images that all go in sequence to create a visual story of sorts, talking about previous homes and things that relate to that, my new home and objects relating to that, and looking to the future at potential new homes.

This first image taken shows a display of previous images and objects related to my family back at my original home in Hull, meaning what you see here is related to a home gone by. In future, the image should be more focused on the objects singularly in the frame, making it a lot easier for an audience member to determine what is being photographed in the image.

Finally, this image follows the same emotional connection as the previous 5, removing the colour entirely and focusing on one subject placed at the centre of the image. The image here follows a similar pattern to the previous 2 images, with the background blurred and the subject focused on, but there are also a few differences. The background is not entirely plain, meaning despite being blurred, there are several objects in the background that could be a distracting factor to anybody looking a the image. Another issue with the image, brought up previously with some of the other portrait images, is the focus on the subject of the image, with the person portrayed here being slightly out of focus, meaning the audience will have trouble focusing on the subject.

This image is in particular very similar to the previous image, with the framing of the shot and the background all bearing a resemblance to one another. However, some of the issues with the previous image are addressed with this image, such as the lighting on the face of the subject in the centre of the image, meaning less shadows are projected on his face and the point of focus for someone viewing the image is clearer. Another issue addressed is the focusing of the image as a whole, which is now a lot better than the previous image, meaning the subject of the image is a lot more visible to the reader. However, there are a few other issues to address with the image, similar to the previous image. The focusing of the image is still slightly off, meaning the subject can still be seen with a slight blur to them, making it difficult to give the image a full focus. The other issue being the lighting, not so much with the subject being too dark, but with extra lighting added onto his face, it would exaggerate the focus onto himself, meaning someone looking at the image would have no other choice than too direct their focus onto the subject.

This image, similar to the first few, is intended to create an emotional meaning by having the subject as the central focus of the image. Unlike the first two images though, the background is plain and blurred slightly, meaning the point of focus is entirely on the subject presented in the centre of the image. By placing it with no colour yet again, the emotional impact of the image is quite drastic, giving it a mysterious effect, or a more dreary emotional effect, making the overall image’s meaning a lot more effective than originally intended. A few points of correction for future would be to ensure the subject of the image is entirely in focus, as when we looked back the images, I found that the person in the centre of the image was slightly out of focus with the rest of the image. Another point of correction would be the ensure the lighting was directly entirely on the person’s face, as it can be clearly seen that shadows are projecting onto her face, meaning points of focus are harder to focus on because of poor lighting.

Here, a slightly similar yet alternative approach was taken into creating the image. Much like the previous 2 portrait images, the original colour and brightness of the image has been reduced to create a rather empty and more emotional effect. However, the framing and focus of the image is near drastically different to the previous 2 images, with the background blurred out, specifying that a viewer’s point of focus is on the person to the right of the image. There is also a smaller point of focus on the blurred object to the left, and by showing the photographer in frame, it creates an interesting effect for a viewer to look at whilst analysing the image. For future improvements, I would plan to create the same blurred background effect, but perhaps try to avoid any reflections of myself in the image, as it can detract from the intended point of focus and ruin the effect of the image as a whole.
